The genesis of the College has to be traced back to the historical visit of the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, the reigning Pope, to our motherland in 1986. In perfect accordance with the vision of the Holy Father and in response to the aspiration of the people of Pondicherry, the Senate of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry - Cuddalore decided to embark, for the first time, on tertiary education. Consequently, the first College of the Archdiocese as well as the first College of Education of the Union Territory took shape. In honour of the Holy Father, the College was named after him. It stands as a monument espousing the values of the Pontiff.

On July 23, 1986, under the auspices of the Archdiocese, Pope John Paul II College of Education was formally inaugurated and dedicated to His Holiness Pope John Paul II by the eminent scholar late Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian, M.A., B.T., Ph.D., B.L., the then Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, with the blessings of Most Rev. Dr. V. S. Selvanather, the then Archbishop of Pondicherry - Cuddalore, with the good wishes of the Honourable Minister for Education, Thiru. L. Joseph Mariadoss and with the pioneering work of Rev. Fr. Dr. J. Paul, the then Secretary of the Diocesan Education Committee.

By ushering the B.Ed. College into existence, the Archdiocese had opened a new chapter in the annals of its educational service for the people of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in particular and for others in general.

The teacher education programmes which we provide seek to develop in the trainees, knowledge without frontiers , understanding without prejudice and professional competencies without lacuna. They promote value-oriented education contributing to the unity and integrity of people .

The quintessence of our teacher education programmes is “quality”. Such a sublime mission, we believe, will widen the mental horizon, develop generosity, inculcate values, perfect professional and life skills, elevate the soul, and benefit the nation. We undertake several steps to improve the quality of teacher education.

The motto of the college is "Let Your Light Shine", It quietly directs the trainees to enlighten students and the community.

The Archdiocese has been rendering yeoman service to people, for over two centuries, in the fields of education, health and social work. It is known for its exceptional service in fields of education without discrimination of caste, creed or social status.
